The fuzzy logic controller (FLC) has been developed for the power management of the battery-ultracapacitor energy storage for an urban battery electric vehicle (EV). The justification of energy storage hybridization for EV has been presented in

. Ultracapacitors serve as a high-power auxiliary storage, so the battery should cover average power demand. A reduction of battery power pulses extends the battery lifetime and improves supply system efficiency.

Flexibility and robustness offered by the FLC give an easy accessible method to provide a power management algorithm. This model demonstrates that information on a topography of the route can be used to better adjust ultracapacitors state of charge and efficient battery power impulses reduction. The principles of the power management for the EV and more details about the modelled powertrain system have been described in.
